Challenges So what is it that makes self-forgiveness so difficult at times? Why do people often continue to punish and berate themselves over relatively minor mistakes? Engaging in actions that are not in line with our own values or self-beliefs can lead to feelings of guilt and regretâ€"or worse, self-loathing. One seminal article on the topic of self-forgiveness defined it as a willingness to abandon self-resentment in the face of ones acknowledged objective wrong, while fostering compassion, generosity, and love toward oneself. There are a number of reasons why self-forgiveness can be difficult at times. Emotions One difficulty is that you might not only feel guilty for your actions; you might also experience shame over your thoughts and feelings. Wishing others ill or harm, for example, might cause people to experience guilt. Anger, envy, lust, and greed are also emotions that can result in feelings of guilt or remorse. Forgiving yourself for such thoughts can be difficult in part because sometimes we are not fully conscious of all of these feelings. Rumination Some people are just naturally more prone to rumination, which can make it easier to dwell on negative feelings. The fact that self-forgiveness involves acknowledging wrongdoing and admitting that you might need to change can make the process more challenging. People who are not yet ready to change may find it harder to truly forgive themselves. Instead, they might engage in a sort of pseudo-self-forgiveness in which they simply overlook or excuse their behavior rather than seek self-acceptance and a willingness to change. How to Process Feelings Without Slipping Into Rumination Benefits The standard axiom within psychology has been that forgiveness is a good thing and that it conveys a number of benefits, whether you have experienced a minor slight or have suffered a much more serious grievance. This includes both forgiving others as well as yourself. Forgiveness can have a powerful impact on mental well-being, too. In one 2016 study published in the Journal of Health Psychology, researchers found that stress, psychological wellness, and forgiveness share powerful interconnections. Research shows that people with high lifetime stress levels also experience poorer mental health outcomes. This study revealed that those who scored high on measures of forgiveness also exhibited better mental health, even if they also experienced high-stress levels. Mental Health Research suggests that forgiveness can have a number of psychological benefits including reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions. One major benefit comes from letting go of anger, which in turn leads to decreased stress. People who are able to lower their stress levels experienced better immunity and more energy as a result. Physical Health People who forgive might be less likely to experience some negative physical health symptoms and have decreased mortality rates. Feelings of anger and hostility have been linked to negative health outcomes. For example, one study found an association between anger and hostility and a greater incidence of coronary heart disease. Relationships Anger, guilt, regret, and resentment can create havoc in relationships, so being able to forgive can go a long way toward improving your family life and friendships. Research suggests that the ability to forgive is a critical component of successful social relationships. Being able to forge close emotional bonds with other people is important, but so is the ability to repair those bonds when they become fraught or damaged. It is clear that being able to forgive others is essential for healthy social relationships, but being able to forgive yourself can also play a role in how you interact with other people in your life. When resentment is directed inwardly, it might cause you to isolate yourself from your loved ones or even project your negative feelings outwardly onto the people who care about you. Being able to forgive yourself can improve your outlook and your ability to relate to others in a positive way. Potential Drawbacks While self-forgiveness is generally thought of as a positive action that can help restore the sense of self, there is also research indicating that it can sometimes have detrimental effects. Self-forgiveness may become maladaptive in the face of certain problematic behaviors. In the case of addiction, for example, being unforgiving of the behavior may actually increase motivation to change. In one study of young adult gamblers, researchers found that among at-risk gamblers, self-forgiveness impaired readiness to change. Misconceptions Forgiveness is not just ignoring a problem. Forgiving yourself is about more than just putting the past behind you and moving on. It is about accepting what has happened and showing compassion to yourself. Being able to forgive yourself is not a sign of weakness. The ability to extend empathy and understanding when you are hurting is never easy. In many cases, granting self-forgiveness is much harder than allowing yourself to wallow in anger or regret. Self-forgiveness is not about letting yourself off the hook. The act of forgiveness, whether you are forgiving yourself or someone who has wronged you, does not suggest that you are condoning the behavior. In an article published in the Journal of Counseling and Development, researchers Cornish and Wade suggest that taking responsibility for ones actions is the first step toward authentic self-forgiveness. By taking responsibility and accepting that you have engaged in actions that have hurt others, you can avoid negative emotions such as excessive regret and guilt. Remorse Allow yourself to feel remorse. Guilt is not always a bad thing. It allows you to think about consequences, feel empathy for others, and to look for ways to improve yourself. The key is to allow yourself to experience remorse without dwelling on unhealthy guilt. Restoration Make amends for your actions. One way to move past your guilt is to take action to rectify your mistakes. Apologize if it is called for and look for ways that you can make it up to whomever you have hurt. Renewal Find positive actions that will help you move forward. How can you emerge from this experience a better person? What steps can you take to prevent the same behaviors again in the future? Forgiving yourself often requires finding a way to learn from the experience and grow as a person. Limitations to the Approach However, it is important to recognize that people often experience guilt, remorse, and self-recrimination in the absence of any true offense. People who have suffered abuse, trauma, or loss may feel shame and guilt about events over which they had no control. The model of forgiveness outlined above cannot apply to every individual and every situation. This can be particularly true when people feel like they should have been able to predict a negative outcome (an example of what is known as the hindsight bias), and thus experience guilt for not altering their actions. Victims of crimes or trauma, for example, might feel that they should have been able to predict what happened, even though the truth is that they had no way of knowing what would take place. Other Methods So what else can people do to foster self-forgiveness? 1. Stop rationalizing or justifying what happened. Facing what you have done or what has happened is the first step toward self-forgiveness. If you have been making excuses in order to make your behaviors seem acceptable, it is time to face up and accept what you have done. This step allows you to take responsibility and admit that what you have done is wrong, unacceptable, or hurtful. 2. Try to understand your motivations. Before you can forgive yourself, you need to understand why you behaved as you did and why you feel guilt over these actions. For example, perhaps you did something that violated your moral convictions. Understanding why you did this can help you decide why forgiving yourself is so important. This step can also help you learn how to avoid such behaviors in the future. It provides insight into the forces that shape your choices and gives you the opportunity to look for more acceptable outlets. 3. Recognize the difference between guilt and shame. Feeling bad when you do something wrong is completely natural and can serve as a springboard to change. Shame, on the other hand, often involves feelings of worthlessness. Understand that making mistakes that you feel guilty about does not make you a bad person or undermine your intrinsic value. In 1969, Travis Hirschi developed what is known as Social Bond Theory. Hirschi built on the work of other social control theorists and was able to provide a better picture of what social bond is. In Social Bond Theory there are four basic elements that make up social bonds. They are attachment, involvement, commitment, and belief. Question: Using IRAC and Statutory Interpretation law only, outline an argument in Wallaces defence. Answer: Issue: Based on the facts, the issue that arises here is whether Wallace can be held liable under Section 4 of the Preservation of Significant Historical Buildings Act 2017 and if yes, then what are the available defences for him in his favour? Relevant Rules and Legislation: The process of statutory interpretation includes the action of the Court in which they apply legislation and rules to any case scenario. A certain amount of interpretation is very important when a case involves usage of any given statute. However, in many cases there is ambiguity and vagueness that the Judges have to resolve[1]. Thus, in such cases Judges use some other tools and method for statutory interpretation. Ideally, the judges follow the following rules for interpretation of any given statute: The Mischief Rule The Golden Rule The Literal Rule In Darwin Northern Territory, the Interpretation Act, 1901 is applicable. Section 15AA of the Act states that while interpreting a provision of an Act, the interpretation which is best to achieve the purpose or object of the Act is to be preferred to be accepted as the best interpretation. Moreover, Section 62A of the Act also states that while interpreting the provision of an Act the construction that helps in achieving the purpose or object of the Act shall be accepted as the best interpretation by the Court. The mischief rule is contained in Heydons Case as per which the following four things needs to be collected for proper interpretation of the statute: The common law that existed before the making of the Act The existing mischief or defect, which the common law did not provide The remedy that the Parliament resolved and the cure of the disease The reason for the given remedy and then the function of the Judge is to make the interpretation of the statute in such a manner so that the mischief is suppressed[2]. The mischief rule was applicable when statutes were a minor source of law in comparison to the common law. The Courts would identify the hidden mischief in lengthy preamble of the Acts and they would apply the same in any given case. The Law Commission of Australia has regarded the mischief rule to be the best than the other two rules of statutory interpretation[3]. The literal rule, as the word in itself suggests that the words of the statutory were interpreted the way it was, meaning as it is. The Courts have applied literal rule in many instances such as Whiteley v. Chappel in which the Judge had encouraged precision while drafting laws. On the contrary, there were many Judges that have criticized the the literal rule on the ground that it is interpreted the way it is written and that many other Judges overemphasize the written meaning of the given statute[4]. According to some Judges Courts may sometimes depart from the ordinary meaning leading to absurdity[5]. In the case of Grey v. Pearson, it was held that the grammatical or ordinary sense of the words should be complied with unless the same leads to some absurdity. In such cases, the grammatical or ordinary sense of the statute can be changed so that there is no inconsistency[6]. Thus, the applicability of the correct type of interpretation rule depends completely on the given case scena rio. Application: In the given case as well, Wallace Gromit demolished the stage where Henry dies and the shrine. As per the information given in the case study, Wallace Gromit was the owner of the pub at Alice Springs that was built in late 1980s. The pub was an unremarkable construction which was not renovated since long. A popular pop band named Two Directions performed at the pub however one of the popular band member died because of lightning. The fans received a huge shock and since then they stopped visiting the pub. This made Wallace demolish the pub however, Wallace was charged under section 4 of the Preservation of Significant Historical Buildings Act 2017. According to section 4 of the Act, It is an offence for any person to damage, destroy or otherwise interfere with a building of historical or cultural significance and a person doing so shall be charged with the penalty of 5000 dollars as fine. However, Wallace cannot be charged under Section 4 because if the definition of the word histor ical or cultural significance is taken into consideration then it says that historical means having cultural value to a significant proportion of the population. However, the Pub cannot be regarded as a historical building as it does not create a historical value to a significant proportion of the population. A pub, even if established late in 1980s cannot be regarded to create historical impact on the people. Secondly, the definition of the word damage, means and includes causing permanent and significant alterations to a building. However, if the actions of Wallace are taken into consideration then only the stage was demolished by Wallace where Henry died. He did not demolish or damage the entire building. He simply changed or modified the structure of the building and not completely destroyed it. The word damage as per section 4 of the Act means completely destroying or damaging the building. Wallace did not completely demolish the building but only destroyed a part of it as it w as restraining him from earning proper revenue. Thus, it may held here that Wallce actions are not against section 4 of the given Act. The arguments of Wallace are prepared following the golden rule of interpretation. In which if the meaning of the original statute is not understood from the words used in the statute then changes or modifications may be made in the words of the statute. The same rule has been applied in the given case as well, since the words of the Act were not clear especially in its meaning of damage and historical significance and meaning of section 4 of the Act. Conclusion: Finally, it may be concluded that Wallace cannot be held liable under section 4 of the Act and the necessary arguments was presented in his favour in the assignment. Do Gorillas Use the Underground Railroad Children Making Meaning from AdultPuzzles This weekend, NPRs This American Life  featured stories on Kid Logic. Over the course of the hour, Ira Glass introduced stories of children who tried to make sense of the many puzzles of the adult world. In one story, a little girls best friend discovers that her father is the Easter Bunny. Rather than putting two-and-two together, both little girls decide that the dad IS actually the Easter Bunny. Their parents go along with the ruse. But how would a child  know?  Do you assume that your parents are playing an elaborate prank on you? Especially when your whole culture is in on the joke? The story made me think of my own leaps of logic. As you might have guessed from the picture above, every time I heard guerrilla  warfare on   the news, I thought Planet of the Apes was at hand. While I have many of my own embarrassing stories,   I also asked my friends to contribute their own kid logic confessions. Here are some of my favorite. Please let us hear your stories as well! Kennedys Crisis Bay of Pigs? How many pigs fit in the Bay of Pigs? If the pigs could swim, the water must be really dirty. I wonder if Havertys has a showroom   I struggled with the term deathbedand considered that the bed was specifically bought for a person to lay down and die on. That creeped me out, and still does..such that I never bought a used bed. Whos That Girl? My mom loves to tell the story of me, around 7 or 8 years old, asking her, Who is this Polly Esther person, and why are you talking about her? I Still Wish I Was Right About This   I was told by a friends older sister that there would be a Cake Walk at my first-ever school carnival. I thought it would be a GIANT FOAM CAKE with a line across the middle. The game was to walk the line. If you diverged, youd fall into a pile of foam (like egg-crate foam) in the middle. If you made it all the way across, you won a real cake.  I was SO disappointed to discover what it really was. Finders Keepers I thought when a business was founded. that they had found it somewhere. The land surveyors and land survey technicians may have the local land laws as their guide in their work, and student surveyors, their special knowledge of relevant subjects including law.4 Unquestionably, education in geomatics is evolving and developing.5 Geomatics empl II. Geomatics as service Geomatics employs techniques used in land surveying, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning system (GPS), and related forms of earth mapping.6 Said to be coined by B. Dubuisson in 1969, the term "geomatics" has its exact definition still shifting. Among so many names, the University of Calgary's web page refers to it as "geomatics engineering." 7 The term, "geomatics," however, has been adopted by the International Organization for Standardization, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and other authorities, while some countries like the United States prefer the term, "geospatial technology.." Geomatics is actually a union of geography and information technology, with the purpose of improving business and policy decision-making, 8 A report of the Federation Internationale des Geometres (FIG) Commission 7 of 1998 reflects the overriding weaknesses of the then-existing cadastral systems as having limited computerization, with inefficient linkage between land registration and cadastral mapping, with incomplete legal framework, sporting little map accuracy, with slow updating, slow customer service, and unsuitable financing model, among other things.9 Advances in computer technology, however, has enabled the rapid progress of geomatics since the 1990s.10 Due to the ease in procuring and working on spatial referenced data, changes have been rapid in geomatics with forceful impact.11 The geomatician's role of surveying in the 1980's has shifted dramatically from acquiring data to today's total information management.12 With various surveying or mapping disciplines involved in different levels of geo-information, geomatics has become a must in almost all courses all over the globe.13.
